Welcome to the life of a passionate coach! I'm Amy Nunn, a Master Rated Figure Skating Professional certified in Exercise Science. From a young age, my passion for the sport was evident and continued to grow as I moved up the ranks. I grew up skating at the Burnsville MN Valley Figure Skating Club, and not a day went by that I did not want to skate. I was fortunate to have a nurturing coach guide me through the ins and outs of my early skating years. As I progressed through the sport, it was clear that this was not just a hobby.
Growing Up
My family moved to Colorado when I was a teenager, and I was fortunate to train at the Broadmoor World Arena and in Denver. I went from being a recreational skater to advancing through the U.S Figure Skating qualifying events. I became even more enamored with skating and fed off the competitive environment. Working with Olympic, World, and National coaches and choreographers was a privilege, and I grew to new heights as a skater and coach. Building momentum to perform at my peak was one of the greatest lessons I learned while training with National Champions and Olympic Team Members. One of my proudest moments was skating clean programs at the 2008 National Collegiate Championships to secure the silver medal. I was honored to represent the USA in two international competitions; the 2008 Cup de Nice (France) and the 2009 Winter University Games (China). It was an experience of a lifetime and opened my eyes to a whole new world of competitive skating.
Perseverance Through Adversity
Even though I was incredibly blessed to experience many great moments in my skating career, it was not without struggle. My love for the sport never wavered through injuries, obstacles, and heartbreak. Growing up in an aesthetic sport can be intimidating, and I often felt the pressure to be perfect. Looking back, I realize the need to ask for what you need so that those around you can help. One of the biggest coaching lessons from my skating career has been to be an advocate for my athletes in skating and life.
Guiding the Next Generation
I will always treat a skater as a person first and athlete second. You cannot thrive as an athlete if you do not care for yourself physically/mentally, which I learned the hard way. Skating can teach many life skills that follow you for the rest of your life, and I strive to instill these values in my students. It is essential for every athlete to ask themselves how they want to be remembered. Even from a young age, kids can make an impact in their community. I encourage my skaters to reflect on their actions and attitudes throughout their careers to leave the sport better than when they started. Skaters can gain lifelong friends by fostering positive and supportive relationships with their fellow athletes.
More to Come...
My main goal is to lead the next generation of skaters to careers with meaning and purpose. By sharing my passion for this fantastic sport, I hope to inspire athletes to reach their full potential, all while having fun and developing sound character. I can't wait to share more insights and tips for your skating journey!
